Celery : Pharaohs' Sacrificial Offerings .. Medical Treatment ..Many Hygienic Benefits
 
Celery was known in the French province of France-Cote for strengthening man's potency and according to an aphorism, if man knows the celery's effectiveness, he will fill up his orchard with it. Researches in Germany and China confirmed that celery aromatic oil has a soothing effect upon central nervous system and cures high blood pressure.Celery is a plant which ranges between 40 cm to one meter in length and has a maximum lifetime of two years. The plant's leaves are dark green , its Odor is strong with aromatic taste. Celery is named "Matat" according to Egyptian hieroglyphs and " lunar Plant " in Greek but scientifically it is known as Apium graveolens. The plant's Native place is Asia before moving to Europe and then to Mediterranean Sea coasts.

Celery in Old Therapy:

Celery is an old herb that has been cultivated for over 3000 years particularly in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Egyptian papyri assured that the plant was used by the ancient Egyptians in several prescriptions in the form of ointment for treating burns, erysipelas and the fall of uterus as well as preventing incontinence. It also cures asthma , tongue inflammation and paralysis, as well as strengthens gums .

Celery was reported , according to the Greeks , to calm nerves, alleviate tooth ache. It was offered as a sacrifice for the dead during the Pharaohs time as a semi-circle wreath of celery was found wrapping the neck and chest of the priest "Kent" inside an old cemetery in Thebes . Additionally, celery was used by Pharaohs in decorating mummies , as anti-rheumatic and anti-convulsion as well as a diuretic factor.

On the other hand, celery has been known among Arabs since ancient times and according to Ibn Sina, it alleviates Swelling , kills pains ,in addition to being useful for alopecia , scabies ,eye pain, sciatica , impetigo , cough and shortness of breath, breast, liver and spleen tumors . The Greek Physician "Galenos" said that Celery's " seeds proved useful for dropsy and for purifying liver ,kidneys, and bladder.

Modern Therapy and Celery
Being rich in vitamins and minerals , celery is used internally as an appetizer , body cells renewal and bloodstreams purifier. It is also an anti-rot , cures indigestion, weakness and intermittent fever such as malaria as well as epilepsy, chest diseases , obesity, increased blood, insomnia and convalescence.
How to Use Celery Internally and Externally?
For the treatment of rheumatism , colds , shortness of breath, cough, hoarseness, gout, and arthritis , one should eat fresh celery with salad or cooked with soup, or by squeezing its roots and drink half a cup each day for 15 to 20 days .For treating fainting spells , one should drink 200 grams three times daily or drink 30 grams of –water - boiled celery leaves in.Externally, wounds can be washed up with celery root juice or by putting celery-juice compresses on wounds , dimples , and cancers . Additionally, it can be used as a lotion against mouth ulcers and tonsils tumor.
Side Effects of Celery:
Celery must not be used by pregnant women as well as people who suffer from kidney inflammation .
